Phil Metzger: Über Christ Follower Revisited

image What's happening in Eastern Europe in my opinion is the most under-discussed, under-reported, church planting phenomenon in the world. Last summer I visited a Calvary Chapel Pastors' and Leaders' at the Calvary Chapel Bible College in Vajta, Hungary and I was absolutely blown away by the fresh move of God's Spirit taking place over there. I saw young church planters that had moved from the U.S. to plant churches in Eastern Europe. Many had married wives and had children with plans to stay and pastor and nurture their flocks until the Lord returns. Many of the young church planters I met were European, all young men and women motivated to reach Eastern Europe with the Gospel. Not only did they want to reach Eastern Europe, but they wanted to raise up more young men and women to go out and plant churches anywhere the Lord may call them. I met a young Russian couple that moved from Moscow to Finland. I met Americans that were working bi-vocationally in Slovakia. I met a native African that planted a church in Bosnia. The freshness and vitality of these young people was contagious.

Overseeing these church planters from across Eastern Europe is Pastor Phil Metzger. Phil has been the director of Calvary Chapel Bible College Europe for a few years and has recently moved with his family to Budapest, Hungary, as full-time pastor of the Calvary Chapel there. Phil is a dynamo. He's a rare breed of leader that is not threatened by the talent of those around him. In fact, under his leadership, people grow into their God-given calling and accomplish things they never imagined possible.

From the websites:

Calvary Chapel Budapest, Hungary is a bi-lingual, Christian church located in the center of Budapest. Our desire is to know Jesus and to make Him known. In Acts 2:42 we are told that the early church continued steadfastly in the apostle’s teaching, in fellowship, in breaking of bread and in prayer. This is the model for our church.

Calvary Chapel Bible College Europe located in Vajta, Hungary. Jesus said, "Make disciples of all nations" and our vision is discipleship. Our desire is that each student will grow in their knowledge and love for the Lord Jesus through the teaching of the whole Word of God. We want to see a strong spiritual foundation established that will prepare the student for his or her future.  As students grow in their relationship with Christ we know that He will direct their lives in worship, service, ministry and godly living in this world.
The College has recently been accredited by the Hungarian government Ministry of Education and the European Union. This will be especially beneficial for Hungarian and European students. Accredited degrees will offer them greater job opportunities and student benefits. Accreditation will help Americans called to minister in EU countries acquire religious degrees required to obtain a religious visa.

Prayer Requests:

  1. Please pray for the Bible College and the Church to continue to exist for the glory of God. We have begun in the Spirit and we want to stay in the Spirit.
  2. Please pray for the finances for our family to live in the city. We continue to live on the generosity of believers who are led of God to be involved in our lives and ministries. Our lives have changed dramatically by moving to the city and we are praying for our finances to match the need.
  3. We feel the attack of the devil much stronger here in Budapest than we have in a long time. Please pray for health and unity in our family.
