Is this a good practice or a bad practice? The California church featured in this video raffled off a car to attract potential church members:
The pastor says this is an extravagant expression that represents an extravagant God. So why didn't they give away a Rolls-Royce?

I think that if a church wants to raffle of a car or anything else for that matter to anyone they want they can. However, to stipulate the winners must be new members is wrong and sends the wrong message to those who are not believers. There is so much more to God than what He can give us materialy. We should be asking what He wants us to do for Him, for His glory and honor, not what He can give us to waste and not take care of and someone else breaks it or steals it.
I think it's wrong. According to Jesus, we're supposed to be known by our love, not by our gimmicks. We have a lot of fun, at our church, just through our joy in Christ and in our fellowship with others; we also get some very biblical and practical preaching and teaching.
But, as wrongheaded as I think the gimmick is, I hope that they allow room for God to work and bless them with spiritual, as well as numerical growth.
