Pas Ethnos

I was doing a little Greek word study from Matthew 28:19 tonight.

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Following are all the places where the combination of pas (all) and ethnos (nation/Gentile) occur in the New Testament, either in the singular (“every nation”) or plural (“all nations/Gentiles”).

Matthew

24:9 – “You will be hated by pantaon ton ethnon for my sake.”
24:14 (cf. Mark 13:10) – “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to pasin tois ethnesin; and then the end will come.”
25:32 – “Before him will be gathered panta ta ethne, and He will separate them one from another…”
28:19 – “Make disciples of panta ta ethne.”
Mark

11:17 – “My house shall be called a house of prayer for pasin tols ethnesin (cf. Isaiah 56:17)
Luke

12:30 – “For panta ta ethne of the world seek these things.”
21:24 – “They will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led captive among ta ethne panta.”
24:47 – “Repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in His name to panta ta ethne, beginning from Jerusalem.”
Acts

2:5 – “Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from pantos ethnous under Heaven.”
10:35 – “In panti ethnei any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to Him.”
14:16 – “In past generations he allowed panta ta ethne to walk in their own ways.”
15:17 – “…that the rest of men may seek the Lord, and panta ta ethne who are called by my name.”
17:26 – “And he made from one pan ethnos of men to live on all the face of the earth…”
Romans

1:5 – “We have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among pasin tois ethnesin.”
Galatians

3:8 – “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall panta ta ethne be blessed.’” (cf. Genesis 12:3)
2 Timothy

4:17 – “But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the word fully, that panta ta ethne might hear it.”
Revelation

12:5 – “One who is to rule panta ta ethne with a rod of iron.” (cf. Psalm 2:8)
15:4 – “Panta ta ethne shall come and worship thee…”

Colson on: Doctrinal Boot Camp

flags[1] I saw this on Christianity Today today. I love it when an article starts off the way this one did:

If you have survived a Marine Corps boot camp, read no further. If not, this article is for you.

I did survive Marine Corps boot camp. but I felt inclined to read further. And so should you.

Writes Colson:

So I was delighted recently to visit a 31-year-old evangelical who understood my concern. Like me, this young man, Donovan Campbell, was a former Marine Corps officer. He has written a gripping book, Joker One, about his experiences in Iraq as a platoon commander. I asked him about younger evangelicals who believe that we oldsters aren't being sensitive enough to their concerns. "Can you imagine," he asked, "what would happen if a scruffy young recruit were to tell his Marine drill instructor at Parris Island that he ought to be more sensitive to his needs?"

Angry Birds

The Charming and Beautiful Susan has been playing Angry Birds, a game for your iPhone, for about a year. "I've been to every level," she bragged this morning to my son Aaron who just found out about within the past couple of weeks. I just found out about it over the weekend. I'm too uncoordinated for video games. I have nightmares about PacMan.

I guess these games are having a huge impact on culture.

Retraction

In a previous blog post, I took credit for a certain cupcake eating process. Actually, credit for inventing the clean cupcake eating process I claimed goes to the person Ricky Aiken stole the idea from. But I should still get a finder's fee.

Phil Metzger: Über Christ Follower Revisited

image What's happening in Eastern Europe in my opinion is the most under-discussed, under-reported, church planting phenomenon in the world. Last summer I visited a Calvary Chapel Pastors' and Leaders' at the Calvary Chapel Bible College in Vajta, Hungary and I was absolutely blown away by the fresh move of God's Spirit taking place over there. I saw young church planters that had moved from the U.S. to plant churches in Eastern Europe. Many had married wives and had children with plans to stay and pastor and nurture their flocks until the Lord returns. Many of the young church planters I met were European, all young men and women motivated to reach Eastern Europe with the Gospel. Not only did they want to reach Eastern Europe, but they wanted to raise up more young men and women to go out and plant churches anywhere the Lord may call them. I met a young Russian couple that moved from Moscow to Finland. I met Americans that were working bi-vocationally in Slovakia. I met a native African that planted a church in Bosnia. The freshness and vitality of these young people was contagious.

Overseeing these church planters from across Eastern Europe is Pastor Phil Metzger. Phil has been the director of Calvary Chapel Bible College Europe for a few years and has recently moved with his family to Budapest, Hungary, as full-time pastor of the Calvary Chapel there. Phil is a dynamo. He's a rare breed of leader that is not threatened by the talent of those around him. In fact, under his leadership, people grow into their God-given calling and accomplish things they never imagined possible.

From the websites:

Calvary Chapel Budapest, Hungary is a bi-lingual, Christian church located in the center of Budapest. Our desire is to know Jesus and to make Him known. In Acts 2:42 we are told that the early church continued steadfastly in the apostle’s teaching, in fellowship, in breaking of bread and in prayer. This is the model for our church.

Calvary Chapel Bible College Europe located in Vajta, Hungary. Jesus said, "Make disciples of all nations" and our vision is discipleship. Our desire is that each student will grow in their knowledge and love for the Lord Jesus through the teaching of the whole Word of God. We want to see a strong spiritual foundation established that will prepare the student for his or her future.  As students grow in their relationship with Christ we know that He will direct their lives in worship, service, ministry and godly living in this world.
The College has recently been accredited by the Hungarian government Ministry of Education and the European Union. This will be especially beneficial for Hungarian and European students. Accredited degrees will offer them greater job opportunities and student benefits. Accreditation will help Americans called to minister in EU countries acquire religious degrees required to obtain a religious visa.

Prayer Requests:

  1. Please pray for the Bible College and the Church to continue to exist for the glory of God. We have begun in the Spirit and we want to stay in the Spirit.
  2. Please pray for the finances for our family to live in the city. We continue to live on the generosity of believers who are led of God to be involved in our lives and ministries. Our lives have changed dramatically by moving to the city and we are praying for our finances to match the need.
  3. We feel the attack of the devil much stronger here in Budapest than we have in a long time. Please pray for health and unity in our family.

Hope for Egypt?

I've been hearing from friends in the Middle East in the middle of all of this turmoil. Some friends in Cairo have been evacuated and some have stayed. Friends in other Middle East countries have witnessed protests but most have been peaceful.

While our government has been cozy with corrupt dictators - even allies with them - in these countries for the past several decades, it seems the people living there have grown weary of their leaders. Yet, there is some hope. Look at the picture emailed to me from a friend of a friend.

While many may look at the idea of Muslims and Christians living peacefully side-by-side with skepticism, the idea of peaceful dialogue between the two is revolutionary. It's what those in the church with a heart for Muslims have prayed for for centuries.

Twenty-five years ago Communism was the great enemy of Christianity. It was predicted that it would be the system that ushered in the Anti-christ. But on November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall, that great divider protecting the West from its Eastern enemy fell quite unexpectedly. This opened up the way for one of the greatest (and under-reported) church planting movements Russia and Eastern Europe has ever witnessed. Could it be that the way for the same kind of movement in the Middle East is being cleared? Join me in praying that it is; that this could happen in our generation.

February articles in the Good News…

logo[1] I have a couple of articles in the Good News this month…

South Florida Men’s Conference

“Men attending Christian churches every Sunday are facing overwhelming opposition,” says Pastor Martin Vargas of Sheridan Hills Ministries.
In 2004, on a memorably cold day in January, Vargas gathered together a handful of men to travel to a men’s event held in Woodstock, Georgia. The theme of the gathering was Grace for the Race. For the next few years, the group of men Vargas took to Woodstock grew. In 2007, they decided to have a men’s conference in South Florida with Pastor Johnny Hunt of First Baptist Church of Woodstock as the keynote speaker. The first South Florida Men’s Conference had 225 men in attendance and has grown every year. read more…

Do You Have Crazy Love For God?

“Am I showing God the kind of crazy love that I ought to be showing him?“ asks Pastor and New York Time bestselling author, Francis Chan. “...God has become so familiar to us that He becomes common.” He wrote Crazy Love to give some perspective to a church whose members are in the comfortable habit of avoiding the things that make God mad. read more…
